You have following options:

1.       Sketch the railing path segments at all elevation changes, which means to draw the rail from the nose of the top tread to the nose of the bottom tread, then drawing another line segment for straight run extension such as 18”, then drawing 90 degree turn, so on so forth.

2.       Extending your railing posts 18” from the nose of the first bottom tread, to see what happening, then adjust the distance to the way you want. Usually you should have to extend at least the tread depth in order to get a smooth transition.

3.       Create a custom post to get the desired transition.

4.       Load the family under Railing>Supports from your library.

Good luck!

for some reason when i try to turn the handrail of the railing 90 degrees to return into the end post, it will not let me. i am in plan view and in the edit rail, edit path command and cannot draw the extension 90 degrees to return into the end post. in the attached image is an elevation looking at the handrail and the post beyond it. that is where i would like the handrail to return to.
