Dear friends,

I'm frustrated. I download very helpful components, such as a fire strobe device (attached below). I wish to insert in this component some text (which I also attach, the "FS" which stands for "fire strobe"). The FS is a generic annotation family, and I'm trying to "nest" it in the fire strobe component (if that's the correct way of saying it).

The result is that the annotation family (the "FS") actually becomes part of the fire strobe component (you can see it in the list of families in the project browser), but I cannot see anything of the annotation itself when I open up the fire strobe. There seems to be no way to "insert" the FS symbol or such.

It appears I am missing a step or something - maybe there needs to be some sort of "anchor" created for the FS to attach itself into?

Please help! Very deeply appreciated.

I personally would never put text into a family as it would appear everywhere it is visible. There is often problems with scaling such that the text in large scale views appear really large to suit that large scale. You would therefore need an on/off parameter for the text which would make for so much work. I would not put a text in the family. I would put text into the family's parameters when its loaded into the project model and when I need to see that text, I would use a tag of the same category as that family that draws that specific parameter's data from the family to populate the tag. This is however a link I found online that discusses further. https://www.revitforum.org/architecture-general-revit-questions/21939-how-show-annotation-text-family-not-model-text.html

Thank you very much for your response.

First, I am not concerned about scale. I work with certain scales and if I insert components in walls like outlets and switches (with their symbols) then if the scale is too big I just hide them.

The question is still not answered in either this thread or the revitforum thread - if I try to nest a generic annotation family into a model component family, as in the case with the FS and the fire strobe, the text is not showing up. Why?

How did the original makers of the duplex outlet and switch nest their symbols into the wall pieces? What did they do that is not working here?

Many thanks and deeply appreciated.

I'll point out first that sometimes what appears to be text is really just symbol lines assembled to appear like text as in the 'S' in the attached image. It's really just two arcs. The other peice of text that is variable when inserted into a project is a 'Label' that is also part of the nested Generic Annotation Family. All of these elements can be turned on or off by applying a Yes / No parameter to the Visibility property.

Hope this helps. Insert and open up the REVIT electrical family 'Emergency Switch' to see a sample.
