For some reason, I cannot choose to set the work plane to any of the elevations. I want to set it to the left side so I can place an extrusion on that...the choices for work planes doesnt include the other elevations just the levels and some random planes of the project...
am I missing something here?

The named work planes are the ones that you can choose from in the list. These include levels and named reference planes (they aren't random). Try using the 'Pick a Plane' option, or alternatively, draw a reference plane where you would like to extrude from and give it a name. It will appear in the list.
