How do I create a stacked concrete column where the column size/shape changes at each floor as it goes up the building?

I have been placing a new column at each floor but the boss wants it to be one column with one tag.

what i would do is to group them and turn each stack in a single object, so if you move one in a level, all other segments in the other levels, also move. And use multi cathegory tag to give it a name.

yes i have done that before but it made a mess when they started changes sizes and shapes on me.  also i believe it splits the grouped column up in the graphical column schedule.
