I have been having problems with columns not showing up in my elevations and have not been able to solve this problem for a while.
The problem is that for example a 200x200 column shows up as a thick black line in elevation... why?

You might want to check the detail level of your view. If the detail level is set to "coarse" the columns might only come up as lines! Change the detail level to say "fine" you should be able to see them! Detail level can be edited in the view proterties!
You can also change the the visibility of detail level in the column family.

If you edit the column family by selecting the column and pressing the "Edit family" button on the menu bar above! Once in the family of the column, select the column and press the button "Visibility..." on the menu bar above. A dialogue box will come up which is the Family Element Visibility Settings box. Here you can set the element (be the column in this case) to come up on different views such as on Plan/RCP or Front/Back or Left/Right or When cut in Plan/RCP. Tick box if you want the element coming up on any of these view. For the column to come up on all view make sure all boxes are ticked. Further more down the bottom of the dialogue box you can specify the visibility of element according to detail level of the view. If you tick all boxes (Coarse, Medium, and Fine) the element will come up in all detail levels. If you wish to only see the element say in Fine detail level than only tick the Fine box.
Your column is most likely only coming up in Fine and/or Medium and not in Coarse. But you view in the drawing (of the building elevation) is set to Coarse (or Medium) detail level. This causes the columns not to appear. Try changing the detail level of the column element in the family to be visiblal in all detail level (including Coarse). Hopfully this will make all the difference!
