Hi All,

I am currently working on a green oak frame building as a practice to demostrate the abilities of Revit and if it is worth adopting over autocad.

At present i have my buiding 80% complete but struggling to replicate the attached roof detail in 3d. Can any one explain how i can produce this?

Also i am struggling to indicate the 2m headroom space in the roof on floor plan. is this easy to do?

thanks for your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Callum

The rafter extension feature pieces would need to be created using a separate family, possibly a line based generic model family that arrays the pieces along the length. This is not something that can be done within the roof system family itself.

As for the 2m headroom height I am not sure what you are talking about?

Give your walls the correct build-up from cladding to batten to insulation to sheathing etc and place them in plan to correct height. It will have layers like a sandwich.

Give your roof the correct buildup. ie.40mm tiles/25 tile battens/25 tile counter battens/75 insul/sheathing etc. Place your roof correctly in plan. It will also have layers like a sandwich

For each material in these buildups, make sure their cut patterns, elevation patterns and render is correct.

Add gutter and fascia to roof eave using gutter and fascia tools. Make sure the profile that defines their size is correct. If you have timber beams and or roof structure model them. Now cut a large scale section - say 1:50. Now in that section place a callout. In that callout you will see the roof/wall buildups. Use 2D lines, fill regions, text, dimensions. mask regions ( 2D content) to turn that simple 3D callout section view into the 2D eave detail that is required. For the 2m head room space, ensure your floor and walls and roofs and ceilings are all modelled correctly. Cut sections to ensure you have everything in the right place. Use a 3D model view and section box tool to really get inside your building to ensure everything is correct. To generate a plan of this 2m high space, go to the floor level plan associated with that level. Check you view range tool to ensure in plan your view plane is cutting at the correct height and looking downward the correct distance.

Apologies for leaving this so long before replying. Work has been chaotic atm!

the 2m line i am refering to is the space within a first floor space in a 1 1/2 storey building or attic space.  this is usually shown with a dashed line. as an office we show this quite reguarly as it allows us/ others to visualise the headroom space and deisgn around. its also usally required to obtain consent to start on site.

Im still unsure how to do the timber outrigger system i know you mentioned a line based generic model fmaily but not sure how where to start, can you reccomend any videos/  tutroials that i can view to understand this.

One final note i have is if i do go down the line of a creating this line based generic model family that arrays the pieces along the length.  i would then have to place fascias and gutters to this. could that still be done using the standard way. or will i then have to create my own familes to attach onto.

Hope all this makes sense and look forward to hearing from you

If you have never used line based families with arrays in revit before you may need to spend some time understanding how it works. Here is an autodesk video for reference.

What you will want to do is create the part which will be arrayed as a separate family and then nest it into a generic model line based family. Then in the line based family you will place an instance of the nested family and array it. You can then add parameters to control spacing.

If the nested family has parameters such as thickness of height and width then you can also link those through to the host line based family.
