I am revising my question, so hopefully someone can answer it more specifically/ in detail. I modeled this reception desk, and i just want to stretch it to be 5'6" When i click on the dimension of 4' it gives me an error message, "labeling this dimension woudl overconstrain the sketch" . Please help, i attached the screen shot with the error message. Again, I just want to make that 4' dimension longer, and have the table top elements, and side leg move with it as i stretch it. if i try stretching the reference plane, it just stretches the entire object with it. PLEASE ANY ADVICE will really help me!

Is there already a dimension on the floor plan that is connected to those reference plane? Hard to give a good answer without actually seeing the family. You could try to upload it here for us to look at.
