I believe this subject have been discussed many times, however, since I am new with Revit and this web page, I need lots of help in creating and modifying families.
First of all what is the difference between .rfa and .rft files (If I am not wrong)? And how they operate?
Second, where are the family files stored?
Third, I want to modify a window family, to create a two 2'-6" wide casement windows in the sides and one 5'-0" wide fixed window in the center with strutted metal frame?
I tried to follow the instructions in the tutorials, and still not been able to create or modify a family.

rfa is a finished family
rft is template file used to create a family
i have 2 suggesions on family creation:
1) make sure your eference planes or corect everyhing is based from them.
2) there are some really nice window families here to download. although the one you want may not be here. down load one and reverse eng. it to see how the original creator did. i know that when i first started that was my approach and it helped alot.
i have uploaded some triple windows check them out to see what you can do with them to learn what you need to do.
good luck

by default, Revit places the family files installed with Revit here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit 6.1
you can also change the location of your library by going to Settings/Options -> File Locations

Thank you Bim man and Hjacobs for your prompt response, I need more specifics, a little bit more detailed explanation on how, step by step, I can modify a window family.
Why when I go to NEW/FAMILY I get an .rft file? There I have limits on type of windows, I believe those are the ones that come with the program. Further more, when I try to incorporate a window with the .rfa into a family I get a conflict and does not allow me to add it?
I have loaded both, .rfa and rft files and I have not been able to modify either to obtain the type of window I want.
I will appreciate your help.

do you have a fax number. i have a tutorial on making a window that may help. it is not the one you want but it will teach you the basics on how to create the window family and you can use that to make yours. it passed on to me from my revit training and i can pass it on to you.

First, you should understand the difference between the rft and rfa file extensions. As Bim Man pointed out, rft stands for "revit family template" It is a starting point from which to build a family. Every Revit family is built from the templates you see when you go to NEW/FAMILY You don't want to modify these template (rft) files. When you start to make a new family, you go to NEW/FAMILY and choose one of the templates. In this case, you want to start with the window family template. After you choose the window template, you can place your opening in the wall and start building your frame and so on. Then you save it as an rfa or "revit family"

Hi, this post is old, but I'm hoping that someone is still willing to help. I'm still new to Revit and trying to create a new window familly, similar to what riosja was tring to do - one fixed window sandwiched by two casement windows. it seems like it was resolved through Fax, but is there a way to post the answer to this question online? I tried to 'create' the window family by using 'components' (existing windows). However, when I 'finish sketch', only middle window remain as is, and the two side windows disappear, only leaving the openings in the wall. What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated.

I did try to search the tutorial. However, searching under 'family' or 'nested window' did not give me satisfying result. From the looking at this post, there seem to be an exact tutorial that shows people how to create window family from the existing windows. There are over 1000 views to this post, and I assumed that there are equally frustrated others who are looking for the same exact tutorial. I would appreciate it if someone can point us to the right tutorial rather than just telling me to look at the tutorial.

Thank you so much, Coreed. That's exactly the type of tutorial that I was hoping to find.
