Hello guys,
I have always wondered if you should build the mullion within panel families or to have them as mullions? What are the differences and benefits for each option.
I understood that if you build mullions in as extrusion, there is then nothing recognized as mullion category in Revit file so that you loose the quantifiable value in the model. But if we arent keen to get the schedule for vendures, is there any other benefits to have mullions as mullions other than to have them build in.
Any insights?

Especially considering the actual construction process when many cases nowadays panels come in as one piece with the mullions (which is essentially a extruded profile of two pieces of aluminum)

I've had good success using the standard mullion placement and editing tools. You should always open the mullion familes to see how they are made in relation to the reference lines. You also need to test how they react at edges, interior and openings within the curtail wall and in relation the the curtain grids.
I've never tried to put the mullions within the panel familes. Too many variables and cleanup issues come to mind. Perhaps others have had success with that . . .

Hi
However, considering the actual construction method, where panels usually come as a whole piece with mullions (non-structural) and they dont really join as nicely as they look in Revit anyways. Does that thus make more sense to build mullions within the panel families as nested shared families for purposes of scheduling?

I'd say it's worth an experiment to try modeling the mullions within the panel families and just use the curtain grids alone if each component shows up pre-mullioned yes !
You'll just need an interior panel, top perimeter panel, bottom perimeter panel and a right and left panel. Then alter the curtain door families to have mullions as well because you can't use the mullion tool any more.
But it does sound interesting.
