Ladies & Gentlemen,

The Goal

To have a set of face based families for use in reflected ceiling plans so that in the event a user accidentally deletes a ceiling they won’t also delete the elements hosted by it.

The Snags

  • When placing these families in a basic ceiling (as may happen during design) they won’t cut the ceiling.

  • When changing a compound ceiling that is being cut by these families to a basic ceiling (which is a possibility I can’t rule out) I am forced to delete the family instances because Revit “Can’t cut instance(s) of it out of it’s host” and “Highlighted geometry no longer determines a plane.”

Are these snags related to the limitations of basic ceilings or am I overlooking something? Thanks.

Sorry - I don't have an answer for your problem.  It looks like your real problem is your users.  I think that is an issue that should be addressed rather than accomodated.  Users should always check their selection set when deleting items.  It's often a surprise to find out what is in there.  BTW, you can always copy/paste a ceiling and hosted items from a previous file into the one where they were lost.

I thought the old 'basic' ceiling was gone in the latest Revit but I may be mistaken.  The basic ceiling that I remember is really not a physical ceiling.   It had no physical properties and that's why there would be nothing to cut.  In early releases, we had always used this to apply a 'ceiling' to an exposed structure and have something to host ceiling hosted elements.

I understand that a lot of MEP guys are pushing for face based because some architects carelessly delete ceilings.
