Ladies & Gentlemen,Is it necessary to have separate metric and imperial templates or is it sufficient to have a metric template and a project units be changed to imperial if required? Thanks.

Are you talking project or view. You need to look at view scale settings, that will be your biggest issue I think for view templates. But for project templates you may also have issues with conversions of simple standards like text height, dimentioning etc. You will obviously have problems with standard noting as well.
