if autocad and Viz can recognize sketch up masses as mass elements and allow you to manipulate as such, revit should be able to also... it's ludicrous that you can't use an imported sketch massing as a mass family or whatever in revit...

You can; Massing, create mass, file, import/link, cad formats, finish mass, done. Make sure masses are turned on under 'v v' not just show mass.
