Hey all,
wanted to get a discussion going about the MArch degree verses the BArch degree in architectural schools across the country.
I graduated in may 2003, with a BArch degree from Tulane University. However, my school is one of those progressive schools that is switching over to the 5 year MArch degree. The class after us will be the first class to receive this disagree. As you can probably imagine, there was a big stink about it from our class. Virtually the same curriculum with a better looking degree... Anyhow, the school decided to award our class with a retroactive MArch degree in one year when the class of 2004 receives theirs.
What does everyone else think about this issue?

As long as you didn't have to pay for it. What about the class that came before you?

The retroactive degree will be available to all previous classes that graduated with the 5yr bachelor's degree I believe....I think that takes it back to some time in the 70's.

I can't believe the schools are doing this - that's nuts. It should have been left alone. I went to Louisiana Tech and graduated in 1990 with a BArch. Tulane is a beautiful place and a fine school. I worked with one of the great architects that graduated from there many many years ago. I just can't see the sense in giving away a Masters degree that way. But maybe they saw the folly in offering a 6 year Masters when all it meant was that the student did one more year of hell for a degree that was for all purposes the same as the 5 year, except with a Masters you can teach at the University level with more credibility.

I think they did it because they felt that the amount of work done in that 5 years was deserving of a master's degree. In my 5 years there at Tulane, I averaged 18 credit hour semesters. Couple that with ,as we all know, time consuming Studio and that's a lot of work!
