If you are using revit 8.0 does anyone know where the solid tool is to create solid forms or to be able to sweep a profile along a path? Is there even a solid tool, I am new to the program and have looked but can not find it.

So you want to create an in-place family? A LITTLE FYI FIRST: IF ITS SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE REPEATED THEN IT SHOULD BE AN EXTERNAL FAMILY. IN-PLACE FAMILIES THAT ARE REPEATED WILL HAVE BAD EFFECTS ON FILE SIZE.
Also, what exactly are you looking to create. You can easily create host sweeps/reveals/fascia's gutters using a loaded profile. This tool is located in your modelling tab.
For the custom geometry creation tools are only possible from within a family. To do an in-place familiy go to your modelling tab and hit the "create" button. Pick an appropriate family category then you'll see your solid/void tools that i think you're after.
HTH.
