I keep getting an error message when I try to open the stair command.

The message reads

A serious error has occurred. The current action has been canceled. it is strongly recommended that you save your work in a new file before continuing.

How do I correct this error or get around it?

Are you working with a central file? Are you working in that central file or in a local file? I would suggest you open your central file from revit with the 'detach from central' box checked at the bottom. Then save that file as a new central file in a different location. Check to see if the stair command works. If so then you can start using the central file you just created and create local copies from that.
