First time poster, long time lurker. I've been having some real issues lately getting certain exterior 3d views to render properly. I'm using RA 2016 and what happens is when I do a rendering (doesn't matter if its ray trace or mental ray) it blends my roofs together when I should be seeing ridge lines/depth. A small work around I've been using has just been to use annotate lines to highlight the ridgelines along the roof but it really does not look good and its pretty time consuming. I'm attaching a picture of one of my renderings to show what I mean. If you look there should be able to tell where one hip roof starts and the other one ends over the garages, also on the far right side of the house over the pop out, the roof line is not flat, it creates basically a double hip, but you can't see this... Normally I wouldn't worry about this, but these renderings are for flyers and it is one thing that the builder pointed out that he really didn't like. Any suggestions on what I should do to fix this would be great. It is a shingled roof and the texture I'm currently using on it is one of the preloaded autodesk textures (thermal.moisture.shingles.rectangle) I've tried a couple other textures and had the same problems with those as well. Anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?
Thanks for any help
Jeremy

Don't know why it didn't load up the first time, Here it is again.... Still wouldn't upload, apparently you can't upload .png pictures, so had to convert it to jpg to get it to upload. Anyway hope someone can give me some answers now hah.

I originally thought your question was about the edges of your roof but now I think it is about the texture or lack of. Try increasing the bumb value for that material. Your sun angle will also affect this and because your roofs are so low slope, the view is almost along the face and Revit's materials will not display as well at that angle.

Alright, I've tried taking the bump value from 300 to 600 then to 1000 and I'm noticing little to no difference in the rendering, also have tried all kinds of sun angles, I've tried 10 amd 2 pm 6 pm to just having the sun at 35 degrees to the house pointing from the front right side of the house, and still no dice.... It defitely has a lot to do with the pitch of the roof (peronsally not a fan these low pitch roof houses but I'm not the client hah). Any other Ideas? Here's another image with the sun pointing from the front right of the house and with the bump value maxed.

I have no other suggestions for the field. You could add a roof cap family along your roof hips and that would help define those edges by being prowd of the roof.

Assuming you don't want to change the angle, try adjusting the camera's eye level. Another thing you could try is a slightly darker or lighter render image for the front and backs hips.

I've tried changing the eye elevation and that doesn't really work out too well. I have to get to be like 15' in the air in order for it to start showing things (and even then it doesn't show everything I want it to). But I do think you're on to something with making slight changes to the colors of the roofs I want to stand/pop out. I'll do some experimenting with that but I think I can get that to work for me. Thanks for the help guys. I'll try to post another picture after I get it working properly. Thanks again

Not gonna lie, I don't even know how I'd go about doing that haha. I'm still a relative newbie with Revit. Took a training course on the main stuff, but when it came to doing renderings and all that jazz, Its all just been trial and error for me hah. I saw the rendering video on this site, and I need to check it out. I've just gotta find some time during the day to do it between projects.

I’m not going to lie either: it’s often trial and error for me too; often relearning something I figured out how to do years ago but forgot. C’est la vie.
P.S. Post the link to that video you’re talking about.

So finally back on this particular job after getting sidetracked on other ones, and made a couple changes to the tints of the roofs. I think this will work out, its not perfect but it does at the very least show the lines I'm looking for. Figured I'd post a picture of the final product in case anyone was wondering how it worked out. Thanks again guys.
