I find it bizzare that when you want to add lines and stuff to your detail group, Revit does not let you make a window selection. You have to go in and pick every item you want to add individually. I do not see the benefit of not being able to select multiple objects at a time.

what if you ungroup, retain the selection after the ungroup, hold control or shift and add or subtract elements and then create the group again?

you can do this. when you click the add button inside edit group look in the top left corner. there is a checkbox for multiple which then lets you do a selection box.
