First off, when I build door familles I like to nest a face-based family that is simply nothing more than detail lines and masking regions to represent the host family plan view. I've found this allows the symbolic part of the door be controlled WAY easier... especially when it comes to swing angles and such. The nested family is controlled in the host families parameters such as width, thickness, and swing angle.
With that being said, the obstacle I am encountering with using that method for curtain wall doors is that you can't assign the nested family "width" parameter since the curtain panels are what they are (I believe that is considered a system parameter).
So is there a way to tell the nested family to automatically be the "width" of whatever the panel sizes are?

i think your only option is to make it as instance parameter and to make it with grips , and this link shows how to do it if you dont know
https://aectechtalk.wordpress.com/2013/11/19/instance-length-parameter-with-grips/
and after you set that in your nested family you lock those grips to the reference planes ( Left And Right ) .
but i wouldnt go all that way instead of using normal symbolic lines carefully .
hope this helps.

thanks, but the problem with that is when you start to make the door swing parametric. which is why i use a nested symbolic family. that is way easier to rotate as a family rather than trying to lock and rotate a bunch of symbolic lines.
right now, it's not so bad... the user would just have to match the instance parameter "width" to the panel width so it is represented correctly. I was just hoping there was a way to assign that parameter to equal the panel width automatically.

i think you can lock the nested family working as symblic line on the door panel reference planes , so it will work automatically , if i understood what you wanted quite right , in the screen shot the detail item family is locked with the left and right reference planes of the default door curtain wall template , and when u change the width the detail item moves with it
