I went to a KarelCad products release last night in Melbourne weher they showcased the new 2007 range (released in 2006, go figure).
The one thing that stood out for me is how Autodesk have all these products which are essentially doing the same thing, or are marketed at the same industry ie: Autocad, Architectural desktop and Revit. However when they make a new release of these products they spread the features around.
One of the things that stood out is that they have put all this rendering and "3d modeling" (I say that quite sarcastically) features into Autocad. They have included Mental Ray renderng engine and some quite nice display options like sketched lines etc in a program that is basically a 2d documentation package and a dog to model in.
They have however not put any of these features into Revit or sketch-up, which is essentialy where most users would be doing there concept design and have repeatedly asked for a better rendering engine..go figure?
Revit, as far as I could see in the brief presentation, has some nice features added:
Ability to use room tags in section
Better interaction with Revit Structure and interferance notification
2 pick array of components
Improved sun studys
I just wonder why they do this?
I understand that they have a legacy of loyal users for such programs as Autocad, and need to change it to legitimise upgrades, rather than get them to move programs. ( I also understand that Autocad is not solely used for Architecture)
However why not just put these new features into all the applications, and make Revit totally the "one stop shop"
Anyway, that was my rant...anyone have any comment?

I totally agree...
AutoCAD is dead, quit filling/bloating it with tools that don't help anywhere near as many people as say these features added to revit would. I'd say for 95% of AutoCAD users noone ever delves deeper than the 2D tools. This is somewhat similar for ADT (probably not as big percentage but I'd wager its a majority).
I've never seen anyone do this with Revit...
It would be nice if Autodesk increased the Revit production team and decreased/deleted AutoCAD development. So many companies i come across avoid upgrading AutoCAD versions until they absolutely forced too. AutoCAD could be so much cheaper if only the common tools were developed instead of trying to teach an old dog new tricks.
Would you say the launch was worth going to? The brisbane launch is tomorrow...

Umm...truthfully no. The problem was that they had about ten products they went through in the 2 hours. Consequently there was only about 10-15minutes spent on Revit (which is why I was there).
The upgrade in Revit seem to be fairly minimal, well at least the ones that I have seen documented. You will probably get a better idea of what the changes are when it is shipped, or look at the AUGI forum.
KarelCad had some good give-aways, including some NFR software packages..so if you go speak up when they ask questions.
Besides that you might be better off at home planning your honeymoon.
hehehe

That's cool, stick around at the end and ask questions.
Good luck!

Well unfortunately i didn't win anything. I did however find the AutoCAD 2007 stuff particular interesting some very nice stuff.
Almost seems like Viz is being phased out. Good thing is that Revit Series now appears to be a complete solution as we are able to do various levels of presentation in AutoCAD from our exported revit model and do complex massing forms in ACAD and use them for the basis of our revit masses quite easily.
Not exactly what we're after but a very smart move by Autodesk...
