Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster.
I noticed this was already an active topic but was 3 years old, so figured I would start a new one for REVIT 2016.
I am experiencing this issue. Previously I could double click families etc, and it would open in a seperate tab, same revit session. Now, each file is opened in it's own revit session, proving to be quite annoying.
I am a very experienced user and completely understand the principles behind opening through revit rather than explorer, but this problem still should not be occuring.
I am curerntly using Revit 2016 on Windows 10.
My actions that lead up to this point are:
I had both revit 2015 and 2016 on my PC. I completely removed 2015 to just work with 2016 from now on. Going through my installed programs, I was removing revit 2015 applications and content libraries, and noticed AUTODESK APPLICATION MANAGER was installed only through 2015. So i removed it. After doing all of this and bringing my PC to only 2016, all .rfa files have now lost their REVIT thumbnails. When i go to open the file, it asks me to choose which program. I had to navigate through C: to find revit, the application was not on the sugested list. Upon selecting revit, all my thumbnails have now returned to revit symbols, and the double click opens the file, but now instead of being opened in the same session, it cereates an entirely new revit session.
Now, I know the troubles of just opening files, what with central models, upgrading etc. But when i sort through thousands of families, some incredibly similar aside from parametrics etc, I like to be able to just click, open and have a look, then import if necessary. Having it open in a seperate revit session removes any ability to import the family into my project, and just proves to be a nuisance.
I have fiddled around with window settings, priorities etc and cant find any solution. This all started from uninstalling revit 2015 and AUTODESK CONTENT MANAGER.
Please Obi Wan Kenobi, you are now my only hope.

I figured it out in the end. Its a file registry issue with windows related to them all sharing the one registry with multiple program versions, and removing one removes them all. Repair installation solves the issue.
Thanks for that :p yeah thats what i do in my project, but I have thousands of families not loaded into the project, and sometimes you dont want to have to import them just to have a look, and opening a new session means you cant just 'load into project'cause its a different session. thus, it becomes irritating
