Take a look at the "How to grow your family..." tutorial on this site.
I wouldn't start a family from scratch using AutoCAD, but if the AutoCAD geometry exists then it is perfectly acceptable to re-use it in a non-parametric Revit family. Most of the Revit web library from Autodesk itself uses this technique.

I received some CAD 3D furniture from a furniture specifier and am trying to make it usable in Revit. Unfortunately when i just import it as a CAD drawing it appears solid black in plan becuase of all of the contour lines. Is there a way to convert it to a Revit family or Sketch-up file?

If you created the family but are only having problems with too many contour lines then just put some symbolic lines in plan and turn the 3-d object off in plan. This is most likely the fastest solution but not the sexiest.
