hI
is there any way to add a mullion or a transom to a window family without going through the complexities of making a new window from scratch ?

You can use extrusion or sweep to add mullions into existing window families.

Open a window family, save to a different name.
Click "Create", the Extrusion and Sweep panel will be shown.
Open the Family Guide, and follow the directions.
You can use Extrusion or Sweep for mullions, use Sweep for stops, and use Extrusion for glazing; also you can learn how to play with materials through this exercise.
To make families is the most important step to learn Revit.
A non-parametric family should be easy.
Good luck!
