A client has asked us to add .00 to the end of all sheet numbers (so, A-100 becomes A-100.00). This has caused the sheet number function in detail and elevation tags to exceed the size of our standard tags at 3/32". Is there a way I can override the text variable in the tag family so that it limits the number of characters (and hence still reads "A-100") without actually replacing the text with custom text (i.e., if a detail changes sheets, the tags should still respond and not have to be modified individually)?
Attached photo illustrates the issue.

I see no way to do what you want. You can create a different call out head where that text is maybe 75% width instead of 100%.

Why can you just modify your tag, to cut the circe to two, and let the text goes beyond the circle?

Create a new shared parameter for the 2 digit suffix.
your view references (ie section heads) will still report the sheet number.
amend the sheet number label in your title block to contain the new parameter as well as sheet number

your solution seems perfect (thank you!) but I'm having some trouble executing. I am able, within my titleblock family, to add a new shared parameter ("Sheet Number Extension") to the sheet number function. It shows up correctly within the family editor and loads cleanly back into the main file (image 1). Within the main document, however, the extension does not appear in the bottom right. When I click on the sheet number I can see that the parameter is there but it is uneditable (image 2). If I try to go through the right-click menu's "rename sheet", the new parameter is not an option (image 3). Likewise, I can add the new parameter to my sheet list but it is uneditable (image 4). What am I doing wrong? The new parameter has identical settings to that of the original sheet number parameter (discipline: common; type: number).

rranyc,
apologies, I forgot the crucial step of adding the parameter to your project.
from your project go to:manage>Project Parameters>Add
select your newly made shared parameter, then tick "sheets" in the categories list on the left right hand side of the dialog
that's it
