It is exactly what the error says, you are trying to insert a component family however whatever family you have chose to import is not a component. Just go to Insert>Load Family and do it from there and you can insert any family type you want.

Thanks...kind of odd that when laying out beam systems that, while working in the command, you can not load families. do you know if people create template files that have all these families pre-loaded and more importantly activated so you can select them during a command?
thanks again,
j

Plywood-Section has nothing to do with beams..... Read the error message!

Well, plywood is found in many structural systems, Truss joist being the most popular. Also plywood is often 'sandwiched' between 2x lumber, thus creating a stronger resistance to deflection in the Beam. So while drawing a sketch in plan view of a number of these 'sandwiched' beams it would be nice to draw the plywood section in a similar fashion as the 2x lumber. The previous response address the issue and I have learned of the work around.
thank you for your time on this matter.

You can create a family like that – double beam with plywood in-between, and draw the entire assembly with just one command.
