I want to merge these three toposurfaces in my project, but when I try merging them they dissapear! I have attached an image showing the surfaces. The centre surface has been altered quite dramatically, but when it merges to the surface surrounding it, they both dissapear, leaving a hole in the remaining surface. PLEASE HELP!

As far as I know, you can't merge seperate topogrphies, you can only merge seperate surface areas in the same topography.
From your HELP

Not really confusing. Again from your HELP: "....The surfaces to be merged must overlap or share a common edge...."
That means they have to have the same elevation all along their common edges.
