yes I think I get the defenition of the two files but technically what is the difference? If I was to save my residential template as a .rvt file, how would that differ to the file I would create saving it as a .rte file?

when you create a new file starting from a template(.rte) file, the new file is given a default name and populated with the info from the template. Any changes made to this new file will not affect the info contained in the template. if you were to use the project file (.rvt) as a template file it would always open with the same name and unless the first thing that you did was do a save as and give the file a new name any changes that you make would also be changing your template. which defeats the purpose of having a template file. most of the differences between project files and template files are operational hope this helps best regards, coreed, aia
