How do you create a custom railing post that is not based on a profile alone? I would like to create a capped post with molding and trim around the base and top. Profiles and extrusions do not allow the creation of such a design.

Not sure what you mean.  Goto this site:http://revit.autodesk.com/library/html/index.html

Click on Revit samples and help then metric then pick railings.

It will take awhile to load and upgrade this revit project but give it time.  You will see ballusters like the first image below.  The second image is also from somewhere on that site.

You can copy these railing directly into your poject but they are the old style.  They don't have the independent handrail.

PS.... There are a lot of good other items here as well.

I am curious to know how to create a post from scratch similar to the newel post that you have displayed? I know how to create a post based off a sweep or extrusion but the process of combining both these elements into one seems complex. What family template do you use for the creation? There are not too many free standing posts like this on this site for download.

Open that project and look at what is there.   That is the best way to discover the process.

Or just open one of the balusters in your library like this one.
