I'm trying to find a way to make a jail cells. I noticed that there are no walls and doors in the basic Revit that will allow me to handle this. Is there any way I can do this myself, or does anybody know of where I can download ones that have already been done. I've looked on here, but, did not see any that would be what I'm looking for.

Use Curtain wall with Empty Panel, create a new Mullion Type to suit the profile of the bars. then create a new curtain wall door.

How do you create a new curtain wall door? I've attempted to go in and duplicate and then edit that duplicate, but, it does not allow me to add mullions or even lines to show the bars of the door. All it seems to allow me to do is stretch or shrink the door, move the handle around, and change how it appears, whether with glass or nothing or a couple of other things.

If you do a lot of work with jails, then you probably want to consider modeling a custom jail door. If the jail door size is always the same, you can do in the family editor without using parameters. I would avoid at all costs using an in-place family as they are for single one time elements that don't repeat. Assuming that you have a lot of repeat elements to a jail cell, you could even make a jail cell family that includes the walls, ceiling, door, bunk, toilet sink etc.. Another option for the jail cells is to use groups.

Hey Tomdinmn, whats that you say about inplace families? We can copy them, around - they work great.... (just checked) And not only can you copy them around, you can group them and change the groups. So you make one door inplace and finish it, then copy it, then group the two of them individually. Then you can specify the as the same group and when you edit one, they will both change... That still does not tell me how to create them. I'm not that familiar with Revit and I'm trying to learn it myself. The tutorials over on dgcad are not very informative, at least the ones I've watched so far, as they seem to only give you overview of everything that can be done, but, not really an indepth teaching of the principals. Does it have to be done in another program or can it be done in Revit?

Sorry for reply you late. You sound real upset with Revit, but no wory anyone start to use Revit have the same kind of feeling as you. So just take your time to try thing out, I am also self leraning about Revit since 2 yrs ago. You will mastering Revit one day. Back to the question you asked. The jail wall and door you can do it in Revit. I tried before I reply you, I can make them in 3 different ways. 1. As the pervious guys said, do both bars wall and door as in-place model. But you cannot reuse them in other project. 2. As I told you before, use curtain wall system to make the bars wall, then make the door as curtain wall door. But you need to well understand the curtain system and family editor to do this task. It is a bit difficult for new user and It is time consuming for the 1st start, but it can be reuse in other project. 3.It is a mixture of curtain wall system and in-place model. Using curtain wall system to make the bars wall, then create an opening on the bar wall to the size of the door you want. Then make the door using in-place model, which fit the size of the opening on the bars wall. But I don't know which I will be suitable for you the most, and I don't what are the size of the steel bars and the spacing between steel bars you are using, so I don't upload to Revitcity. If you can upload a CAD drawing of the Jail Wall and door for me, I make it for you during weekend.

Ok, I've made the curtain walls, with the mullions for the bars. For the vertical bars, I'm using a 1 inch circular mullion. They are spread 6 inches apart. The horizontal bars are a 1 inch by half inch rectangle bar and they are spread 2 feet apart. The doors are 2 feet wide and around 6 feet tall and they swing outwards.

To create the curtain wall door of bars: create the bar as a generic model family with adjustable parameters for height, then load it into your curtain wall door family, you'll need to array the bars using array to last (refer to my tutorial located in the tutorials section), add parameters for spacing, no of bars etc, Note: the array height can be locked however the other parameters will need to be set appropriately in the project as in a curtain wall family you do not have access to the width parameter for use in formulas etc. Let me know how you go... But yes curtain walls for the bars will be the best way to go as they can still define the room boundary and are easy to manipulate if you create a system. HTH.

The Attachment here is the Jail Cell Door. I also created an example to show you how to use it step by step in the next thread. Download them both and have a look of the example.
