I am working on a plan detail that i would like to dimension the fireplace in the plan to the walls of the room, but the walls are out of view. Is there a way to do this? In autocad i'd basically draw the dimension then put an arrow on the one end and overwrite the text to say the correct dimension. I've attached an image of my view. The 8 3/4" dimension should really say 3'-0". I've tried to draw what i want it to look like too.

You can't dimension to something that you can't see. You could either show the wall or you could use text w/ an arrow to "fake" the dimension

You can also include the wall in the view and split the plan to make it smaller.

Or you can use this Detail Item family. Not a true dimension, but it will do what you need.
EDIT: FWIW, added flip arrows to improve family behavior.

Hey Pijpiwo,
Could you repost your link as a 2014?
Thanks

I’m sorry Shatner, but I don’t have an access to 2014 at this time. Try building it yourself, it’s just a line based detail item with nested non-parametric tick mark, arrow head and text label – all generic annotation families. Give it a shot and If you’re stuck somewhere along the way and need a help, just let us know.
