So I have had this problem for a while and cant figure it out. Typically I add reference planes for the dimensions to snap to. But this one is big and would like to take care of the problem once in for all since it also confuses people.
When I insert a door in my exterior wall the hatch pattern and wall lines denoting the material layers either dissapears or changes. Check out the attached file. There are 3 exterior identical doors in the same wall type. The door on the left changed the hatch to a diagonal. The center door no hatch but it splits the difference in hatch no hatch with the windows. The right door no hatch. What does this and how is it fixed?
Thanks,
Karl

Ive encountered something like this but it's between a column & a wall. The column's hatch changes to whatever the connected wall's hatch is. The solution for that was to make jure the walls and column does not autojoin (something you have to edit inside the column family.
As with the door, I'm not sure if it's the same problem though. Can you attach the door family here so I can try it first here?

Why would you ever dimension to reference planes rather than the real element. This is a disaster that WILL happen!
Your problem is your drafting hatch pattern. Take a look at the two sets of walls shown in my first image. They are the same except I assigned a different drafting hatch to the wall materials. The setting you need to change is shown on the image on the right. This keeps the hatch orientated with the wall orientation.

hi archjahz
regarding your problem " The column's hatch changes to whatever the connected wall's hatch is"
as far as i know "column and structural column" are behaving differently.
you might want to indicate if its an architectural or structural column.
architectural column in general, adopts the material of element (i.e. wall) if it is attached or sometimes touching just the wall face will change the architectural column material.
see attached image
