Yes, Revit 2009 - I am behind the times. 

I am trying to make railings like these (sketchup 3d image sttaced) and I am not sure how to go about them - the frame is a steel pipe, there are no balusters, the posts are attached to the outside of the stringer. The horizontals are cable rail.  I want to use the same railings for both the stairs and the deck rails. Any help on how to proceed will be much appreciated !

WOW

SORRY to butt-in....and sorry to say that this is POSSIBLE... 

see attached file, you can just modify the start and end post of those railings

and if (just if) you are not able to do that, you can always use generic model family and use sweep and sweep blends to create your railings as if you are doing it in sketchup.. but with parametric lengths and angles for deck or stair rails
