My firm is trying to finish up some drawings for a project and we have a beam that goes through a wall and have the wall wrap around it completely. I was wondering how can I make it so that the beam cuts through the wall, making a hole that is the profile of the beam so that it can be done correctly. Is there a way to do this?

hi
edit your beam family.
i always, copy the solid extrusion and paste it in the same place.
change the solid to void in property pallete. and edit the newly created void extrusion and make sure every line is locked.
load back the beam to the project and use CUT to cut beam and wall.

That sounds rather complex. I would simply edit the wall sketch.

Yes. But i prefer it this way.
I cannot count how many times i need to edit wall sketch for beams crossed my wall for every storey for each block.

ronmalit,
I guess I don't understand what you are doing. I doubt that a void, nested in a beam family, will cut a wall but I've never tried that.
I do use face base void families that will cut their host and that would work if you don't want to use wall sketches.

Thank you for the help. The only thing that worked for me was editing the wall profile. The void in the beam family didn't work because it voided the beam out then. Trying to figure out where exactly the void should be is a bit of work to do if the beam were to randomly hit the wall 13/16th of a way in. I am not sure how to do the viod by face family. That didn't make much sense to me so I had to edit the wall profile to make it work. Thank you for the responses.

Concrete beam can be joined with a wall to cut a hole. For steel and wood beam it doesn’t work though. A void in these beam families works very well. Take a look at the enclosed file. Hope it helps.

Ah! That's why I can't join them nicely. Makes sense. I guess we will just have to draw a profile in the wall or do detail lines in drawings to make it correct. Thank you very much

Beam families in my file above have voids in them and are cutting the wall very well. The holes in the wall (see pic. above) are cut by the beams that are hidden in the view. There is no need for wall profile edit or detail lines. Take a look at them, if you like them, use them. They work for me, they work for Ron and I’m sure for many others as well.
Cheers.
