Hey Everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I was wondering if anyone has stumbled upon the website www.YourRibbon.com? My company has been trying (successfully!) to try and get all of our drafters to move from AutoCad to Revit full time and the biggest complaint from the drafters is that Revit doesn't have HotKeys like AutoCad did so they can't draw as fast in Revit. Well, I did a little googling and I found YourRibbon.com and it looks like a great add in tool for Revit.

They have a light verson for free and a full version for about 50 bucks. Before I download I thought I'd see if anyone knows anything about this tool?

Revit has two button hotkeys that you can configure.  In addition, we don't typically draw a project, we model it and the drawing is the result.  If you get your users to use the product as is rather than trying to make it CAD, you will be rewarded with much faster, more accurate documentation than you ever had in CAD.

This takes a while to get there but when you do you will have users like ours that now refuse to do anything in CAD.  Even just for plain 2D work, they know they can do that faster and easier in Revit.

Good Luck.... Heavy CAD users are hard to convert and will even sabatoge (not necessarily puposeful) your efferts.

Go to the big 'R' in the upper left corner, select options, user interface, and then keyboard short cuts. Revit already has a lot of the "hot keys" already built into it.

Thanks for your replies. I agree that trying to get the drafters to make the switch from drawing to modeling is tough, especially when all they have known is CAD. I am getting the most resistance from the more experienced drafters, where the younger drafters are a little more willing to at least hear me out and see that Revit is way better than CAD.

I think I also need to clarify my question a bit from my original post.... I posted after a long day of Revit struggles and I don't think my thoughts were clear....

From what I understand, Revit gives you the ability to customize the command in their keyboad shortcuts, but not the exact component which is what my team is the most frustrated with. For example, if there is a beam type used often you would still need to fish through an entire list of beams to get the one you want. Also, doesn't Revit "hotkeys" just pull up the last command used?

It looked to me like YourRibbon lets you put in family names and then assign a button to the components (EXACTLY what I'm looking for). I went ahead and installed the trial version last night which only gives you 2 buttons on 2 dropdowns. It didn't ask for any credit card information and it doesn't appear that the trial version expires so I'm going to play around with it for a few days and see if it is as good as it sounds.

If anyone else is willing to download the trial version and give me your input I'd really appreciate it.

Your right, you can't have an exact component shortcut but gee..... how many shortcuts can you remember, one for each type of everything?  I doubt it.  Revit typically defaults to your last item done in that category.

Some other methods that are better in some instances:

  1. One of the best is to right click on an item already in the view and right pick - create similar.  That will start the proper command and use the family & type that you picked.  Better than a shortcut!
  2. Pulldown through the family browser to the family and type that you want - right click and pick create instance.

I don't know of any project that I would want a ribbon with all of the family/types on it.  Maybe if I were doing shop drawings and only had a few items to deal with ......

I agree I don't want/need a shortcut for everything that would be ridiculous, just what is used most often and there are several components we use over and over again on different projects.

Just a few shortcuts to the most commonly used components would make a difference, at least I think so.

Another engineering firm has told me about backwards workarounds for placing components but that still isn't faster than good ol' keystrokes...

I do appreciate your feedback, I'm going to try the methods you suggested and compare it to YourRibbon and see which would work better/faster for my needs.

WWHub has the best response in my opinion. Click it, then right click it, create similar. Its that easy. I understand it may be hard to teach people a new way of doing things. But I will tell you what, once they realize the power of Revit they will never go back to Cadd/Autocad. But they just have to be willing and open minded to learning something new. Revit will do a lot of work for you that cadd won't.
