How many of you are frustrated with the way families are listed in the properties type pulldown as well as the family area? In system families, the by name only organization is not really a problem but with detail families, the name sorting just doesn't work.
Name sorting may have worked if autodesk had started early using a naming convention but they did not. Just look at a couple of similar detail elements. The library joint sealer section contains a caulking section, a fiber expansion joint sealant, and a joint sealant section. There will be a lot of detail components between these three elements which should be listed together.
Autodesk did use the 16 division format for organizing the detail elements in the library but why didn't they use that as a parameter for sorting in the browser or even use it in the beginning of the family name? Just the first two digits would have been great! (I'm lucky if I can remember just the first two digits.) And furthur more, why doesn't Autodesk organize the rest of the library in a similar manner?
A couple of years back, I started to try to help our users by renaming some items. We had several different toilet types in our library and template. Of course the manufacturer provided families were named according to the manufacturer and thus they were all over the place. I renamed all of these so the first word was Toilet....
The problem is, I can't rename the entire library and library maintenance during upgrades is already a problem. So:
LET'S ALL WORK ON A WISHLIST ITEM TO ADD A SORT PARAMETER TO ALL FAMILIES!

I 100% agree, having just started at my new firm it is a NIGHTMARE trying to find out where their families are and how they have named them! A sorting parameter would be very beneficial to everyone.

In the mean time, you may want to take a look at the "2D Placer" addin by plain tools. It has search capability to narrow down what you are looking for. And the interface is better than the properties type interface that you mention.

Agreed 100%, and I gave that up long time ago.
My way is to keep the office template as simple as possible with just the minimal required items.
I created several files, such as "Doors", "Windows", "Toilets",...., all in legend with brief descriptions.
Always open two Revits, if I need a Toilet, just open the Toilet file, select the one I want, drag and drop onto the project legend.
My approach is alway starting with simple and minimal, then adding new things as needed, instead of loading everthing then sort through those junks. That's my two cents.
