Check out the image. the railing has a top rail, but its not on the list in the rail layout. When I make a new railing from it, it still inserts this railing even when I have another railing (like the wood railing in the image. you can see it intersecting with the default rail)
anyone have any suggestions to get the grey railing to go away...
THanks in advance.

Delete the offending railing!
Remember - pre-2013, there is no seperate handrail in railing definitions - only railing so be careful using older railing families.

So How do I "delete the offending railing"? do you mean purge it out? then make a new one? Im a little lost. where are the current railings if I dont have them?
Can you give me a slightly more step by step to what you mean?
the rectangular railing choice will always have the 2x2 rectangle default railing always there? if I remove it with the properties, the end baulisters get deleted with a warning about top below bottom kind of thing.

We don't know what you have or are doing. As I wrote earlier, railings have changed and they can now have a handrail that is part of the railing but controlled with a seperate sketch. That rail is NOT defined in the main railing. If your current project (or template) was an upgrade of an earlier railing definition, then it will not have this seperately controlled handrail. If you don't have these in your project/template, you can find them using one of the default stock templates in 2014/2015.
You don't say what Revit but I think your on 2014 or maybe 2015. Read about these railings and how to modify them in your HELP.

Thanks for the help Hub.
I did figure it out. Was because of the "Top Rail" is defined in the families, seperate from just the rail profiles and family types. so one doesnt add the top rail in the rail structure. its defined in the properties under "type", one must first define a new top rail type, then all the other rails can be placed as you like.
Was new to me. help files are good, but tough to find exactly what one is looking for :-)
