If i have alarge DWG file tring to link it into Revit. When i link it into the project, it is taking FOREVER. what problems can i be running into? how can i try to speed up the process? any suggestions. I've tries purging and auditing the cad file, then linking it, and i'm jusy having no luck. I was thinking maybe of cleaning out the cad drawing completely, one layer, only what i need(the pipe),  then try linking it in. Any suggestions?

Does the file reside in your Revit file directory?  I will only linke files that are in the same folder or a nested folder so the path's are relative.

Does this DWG have X-Ref's?  Again - they need to be easily accessible or bound into the CAD.

We always link files and RVT models into their own workset so that they don't always have to be loaded.  You do know about reduced loading at file startup?

Is this a 3D CAD?  If you link the CAD and have the "SHOW IN ALL VIEWS" checked, then it will show as 3D and that may be an issue.

Yes the file is in the directory, except it is a folder called links. i took out all of the x-refs. It is a CAD Pipe file, if that makes a difference, just fyi. Yea i know about specifying what worksets to load when openning. Where can i find the "show in all views" checked, its in the workset dialogue correct?

Correct - set the all views in the worksets dialog.

I'm in the process now of taking my CADPIPE file, openning in AutoCAD MEP and deleting as much layers as i can, purging it, auditing it, and placing all elements on a single layer, then converting to 3d elements, then exporting, so that i can import it into a generic model family, because really i need no information from it, i just need to tag the mechanical eqiupment, which i plan on finding the correct rfa and just placing it over the top. this is not exactly what i want, but it seems to be running a little faster. I mean i'm almost at the point if just taking a snip of my screen and importing a image over the top of the arch and struct rvt that i have. lol. any other cleaning methods for the CAD file i can incorporate?

ideally i would like to link in the file, and i have the first CAD file in place, in my other file, and i acqiured coordinates, so i can just link using shared coordinates, it is should come in in the correct location, but that wasn't going the smoothest.

I have found putting the CAD file into a family file and loading it in, is actually working a lot smoother than what i thought it was going to. well in other situations, such as having to tag the actual piping and spot elevations and what not i guarrentee it would be a nightmare, but what i need it for is just a converted model into revit, and we just need to tag mechanical equipment, so i'm just going to find the rfa for the eqiupment, lay it over the top of the generic model/Cadpipe file, and tag that. in this situation cleaning the cadpipe file then openning it in autocad 14, or lclosest version to the revit version you have, and using the rfa method is working out pretty well for what i need it for. Thanks HUB for your time and concern on my situation, appreciate it.
