I am looking for a way to have a 2D symbol embedded into another family with the controls to display or not display the symbol by view.

Here's the scenario:

I am trying to locate underground utilities that are needed on a foundation plan such as drains, vents, gas stub-ups, electrical, etc. Presently I create my toilet, sinks, tubs, etc. as normal and come back on a foundation plan and add symbols on top of the 3D components with linework.

In the case of a toilet or bathtub, it's best if these objects remain as 3D objects so that I have the benefit of an elevation in the bathroon shown a 3D toilet and tub, otherwise I would use 2D families.

I don't want these to show up on a floor plan, only a foundation plan where the plumbing fixtures DO NOT show.

Does anyone have some advice as to how this can be achieved?

many thanks.

Jgfry, when you create elements on a family (2D or 3D) you have a button, on the Modify Hub, that control the Visibillity Settings. There you set if that given element will show only if is cutted, or in wich detail level it you appear.

That a look at that, I think there you will find what you need.

thank you for the reply, but I don't think you're understanding what I'm asking.

Can you nest a family, specifically a line based family, and control it's view with a toggle on the host family. Refer to my example need in the first post - having circles representing drain and water line locations for a sink or toilet. With those fixed locations contained within a family that is nested in the sink or toilet family, then being able to turn them off in all views except an underground plumbing plan.

thanks for any input.

Dauster did answer your question.  You can set visibility in the family and it can be set to a parameter 'switch'.

Your problem will be the underground plumbing plan.  If the element is not in the view, you will not see it.  You might have to use an underlay for that.
