I am trying to model a wire mesh screen, and the easiest way is to make a mass and divide the surface using the rectangle patter. However, I can't seem to apply a material to that surface once its divided, either with a parameter or with paint.

I believe you need to add the material to your generic model pattern based family that you will be using.
Read all of the HELP's sections on patterened surfaces.
