I am trying to make a floating staircase which is supported by a hollow tube stringer. But I can't seem to figure out how to insert stringer profiles into the project. I've seen a few threads where people wanting channels are told to just upload the construction template which has channels already preloaded and I notice a structural template has I beams preloaded, but I want to use a hollow tube. Unfortunately inserting a profile just places it in generic profiles and it does not appear in the stringer options even when I edit the profile to be used as a stair support.

I don't really want to use the railing work around, so I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and found a solution.

I'm using Revit 2014.

Load the profile you want.  Its under Profiles>Framing>Steel>HSS.  You will need to actually go into the family and make the profile usage a stair support however for it to work in a stair.

That's the thing, even when I do that it it doesn't show up in that drop down.

The profile needs to be assigned "generic" and not assigned to stairs.  Try a new project using the commercial template.  You will find the channel profile there.
