Pros:

  1. Don't need to tag family with embedded label
  2. Easier to identify with text label

Cons:

  1. Once you embedded a label inside family, you cannot easily turn off the tag. You may need to setup additional parameters to control the visibility of the embedded label or tag
  2. Can increase project file size
  3. Other annotation information need to work around the embedded label. If you move the embedded tag/label, you also move the family
  4. Additional time/resource will be needed to manage embedded labels/tags inside families

The particular type of families we are reviewing in our office at this time is electrical power/data outlet families.  My preference at this time is to distanguish different type of outlet graphically and avoid using embedded label or tag at this time.

I created a travel distance family some time ago for calculating exit path's travel distance.  The embedded label show the path sigment's distance whic was informative and can be turn off with an instant parameter.

Has anyone developed a general rule/guide line for embedding labels or tags inside REVIT family.

(we are currently working with REVIT 2014 in a Architectural Company)

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Instead of embedding, why not use a group in the model?  Then you can mange and ungroup when necessary.
