Using Revit 2014
I am trying to shorten the the Sheet X-reference parameter from the long full sheet number to an abreviated drawing number (ref. attached screen shot). When I open propreties of the section the 'Referencing Sheet' edit properties are disabled.
Can anyone suggest how this can achieved?

If only part of that number is your reference, then you need to change how you number your sheets and only use that. Your sheet can be set up with two parameters, your sheet number on one side and the rest of that number on the other side - then it will look like one number if that is what you do.

Hi bdhoy,
We managed to achieve what you are after. Let me briefly explain what we did then you can decide if that works for you. What we did was divide the drawing number on the title sheet into two parameter/labels. We called them "Project No." & "Sheet Number"
The Project Number parameter is where we input generic data such as level, disipline, building no e.t.cThe Sheet Number parameter is then the end part of our code, this is what we linked to the section head family.
With the parameters/Label added (via shared parameters) the Sheet Number is then linked to the section head family and added using labels. You can create new section head families with the templates provided with Revit.
Most of this has been completed by our CAD manager who has left now so not sure 100% on how easy the process is to complete, but hopefully the method/logic to how we did it will help you. Any questions let me know and I'll do what I can to help/answer.Regards,Shatner86

Thanks for both of those answers. Seems to confirm what I was not wanting to do. Thought (and hoped) their may be a simplier method similar to renaming section x-ref on sheets through properties.

Bdbhoy,
Creating labels within Shared parameter's on the Sheet family and Section family will create a parameter you can edit within properties.
See attached below.
