Hi,
I am creating revit families for my company, and I have been asked to create parameters within the families that can't be edited. So, is there any way to create a parameter, give it a value, and then make it so that it cannot be edited by another user? As an example, creating a parameter named "Contact Number" and then a value of "XXX-XXX-XXXX". Is there anyway to make it so this parameter can't be edited? Thanks

No - There is no way to really do this.

There is a "Lock" check box in the Family Types dialog that will lock the parameter. I've also seen people fill out the Formula space with the value the want instead of a formula. Either of those should keep users from editing the parameter from inside the project, but there is nothing keeping them from opening the family and editing it there.

tkennedy - try it out first!
Lock a parameter in a family - load it then edit type in the project. BINGO! You can still change the locked parameter.

That's why I said should, I know it's available but I've never had a need to use it. I know putting the value you want in the formula field will make the parameter uneditable in the project, I've had to open manufacturer families a number of times to remove it.

WWHub and TKennedy, Thanks for your responses. I didn't think there was a way to do, it but wanted to make sure. I've also found those problems with the "Lock" check box. I've already been using the Formula space to make it harder to change.

You can sort of "lock out" someone from editing a text field like you originally stated. For your specific example, if you had a parameter where you wanted to put your phone number or even a description and didn't want the end user to modfiy this information, just put quotation marks in the "formula" area along with the information you want. So for example, if you just typed "212-555-1212" in the formula area it will gray out the field and the end user cannot modify this information. Now if you edit the family, then anyone can change it. There isn't a way to make a field write protected from all forms of modification.
