I use revit architecture 2011 and am having trouble getting the marks
I have assigned to windows to show up in the window schedule..
The mark shows up in the properties dialog and on the window tag.
What am I missing. The scheduled fields show “mark” as the first
item. The type marks show up in the window schedule.

You can set up a tag to read either the type mark or the instance mark and you can set your schedule to read either. The process is up to you, just be consistent.

I gues then the real question is: What dialog do I use to get the schedule to real the instance mark?

Edit the window tag and change the reference to "mark" instead of type mark. Save the tag with a new name and load into your project.

I select a window tag from the drawing, then edit family, then I get a sample tag but where do I change the
reference?

You need to spend some time learning family fundamentals.

I read everything about families. I have another drawing that looks exactly like your attachment. The window schedule reads the mark. The current drawing with the problem appears to be exactly like the other drawing but the window schedule will not show the window mark in the mark column. I've tried everything to get this to work.????

The scheduled fields are set up with "mark" at the top. If I select a window, e. g., the one with the window tag 101, it shows up in the properties dialog as mark "101". Yet when I go to the window schedule the "mark" column is blank
I tried setting up a new from scratch drawing, drew a wall, added a door and a window. It worked fine if this helps solve the problem.

Did you read my very first answer????? NOT
Please tile your view so you have your schedule and a view with the tag up. Now, change the mark in the tag. What happens in the schedule> Now click on the window and under type, change the type mark. What happens?

Yes. The window schedule is set to read the instance mark listed in the properties dialog. The window tag is set to read "mark". If I change the mark in the tag, nothing happens because the mark column is blank. If I change the the type mark, nothing changes in the schedule. The door schedule appears to be set up the the same as the window schdule and it works fine.
Sorry I can't figure this out. I started another drawing by drawing a wall and putting in a window and the schedule works OK.

make sure, after you loaded the new tag into your drawing that you select the existing ones on the plan to be the new family type. if you renamed a new family out of it... Hub has it right though, once you open the family, select the text and make its parameter type the one you want. save again renaming it (so you have both). load into project, and set all the tags to be that type. Ive done this too, and you just got to do it once and it will act like the door schedule you like. I personally don't know why it doesnt act that way now.... but HUB is also right in that I have used both methods now. Though I like the way the door schedule works too.
edit. also make sure the window schedule has the right list fields now too.

In the window schedule properties dialog under available fields there are two listings for "mark". One is the correct one and reads the "mark" of the window. The other one gives a dimension. I have no idea how it got in the fields. I waw choosing the wrong one.

Cool. keep your window scheuls simple at first.
sometimes I have just the mark, height and width, and a comments field I type in the name, like casement, or fixed...
you can type in whatever you want. makes it easy to update and keep on top of. then if you need to make the schedule more complex as you get to CD's
