I would like the multi-category tag I use to be able to read the "number" parameter of a space, though I haven't found a way to do this. Is it possible?
Basically I want the space/room number to be part of a unique ID# assigned to each piece of equipment. This ID# appears in the tag, in schedules, etc. My goal is, if the room number changes, I can just change the "number" parameter of the space and it will update the IDs of all the equipment in that room.
Any suggestions?

From your HELP:
Room Aware Families
In most instances, families placed within a room are associated with the room in a schedule. There are a few circumstances in which a family instance does not report its room correctly. When families such as furniture, doors, windows, casework, specialty equipment and generic models are placed in a project, sometimes parts of their geometry are located outside a room, space, or within another family, which results in no calculable values being reported.
If you have a room aware family, it will schedule if within the room (includes all parts of the family including hidden lines). Note, as of 2014, you can adjust this room aware point. See the help videos.
Room aware families will not tag with what room they are in.

Thanks for the response.
I guess being able to use the room number in a tag is what I want most. I've been able to schedule using room-aware families.
What I'd like is for say a wall box in room 101 to have a unique ID as 101-1, the next would be 101-2, and so on. I'd like the room number part of the ID to populate the label automatically. But maybe this isn't possible with a multi category tag? I may just have to enter all of the ID #s in manually for now.

If you knew how, you might be able to build an extension to do this but no way now to do this automatically.
Make yourself aware of what extensions are available to you. I doubt there is one to do this but there are some useful ones.
