when creatinging parameters within a room schedule, what is the significance of createdint it grouped by [1] "values are aligned per group type or [2]values can vary by group instance. Each room is a separate family, not sure what this means. see link... http://screencast.com/t/Rb1ugEGJ

Directly from your HELP:
Creating Project Parameters
An option is available if you are creating an instance parameter that is one of the following types:
- Text
- Area
- Volume
- Currency
- Mass Density
- URL
- Material
- <Family Type>
Select either:
- Values are aligned per group type (default): If an element with this instance parameter is part of multiple groups, the parameter value will be the same for corresponding elements in all group instances. While in Edit Group mode, you can select the element and modify the parameter on the Properties palette. Changing the parameter value for the element in one group will change the value for the corresponding element in all other instances of the same group type.
- Values can vary by group instance: If the element with this instance parameter is part of multiple groups, the parameter value can vary for corresponding elements in group instances. While in Edit Group mode, you can select the element and modify the parameter on the Properties palette. Changing the parameter value for the element in one group will not change the value for the corresponding element in other instances of the same group type.
As you can see .... it deals with objects in groups.
I still don't understand your comment..... Rooms are NOT families.

Your problem is the parameters you added are schedule based. Don't do it there! Add the parameter through the manage / project parameters tab and in the room category. Now that parameter will show up as available in all schedules using rooms.

And since you already created a schedule parameter, you may have to create a different one at the project level because you can't seem to remove the schedule parameter.

Thanks for that lucid responce. ignore the familes comment, misuse of a term.
Which of these radio buttons should be selected: http://screencast.com/t/JEvYWmrYeV
I am not clear how a room can have a parameter that is by TYPE. what is an expample? I understand it in the context of having room styles, and each style has parameters that are all thesame with the style type. Is that the meaning of this setting: if I say the room is a kitchen STYLE, all parameters of a certain field (baseboard for example) are a certain type (tile for example). So in that case, the field I create (baseboard) should be "grouped per group type"? not grouped by group instance

For room finishes - instance.
The type refers to groups I think so a room in the group type..... understand? I don't completely because I've never used the function.

this is a list of schedule parameters for rooms in a project http://screencast.com/t/OgIT56qxBp
- the ones in orange are listed in manage/project parameters.
- the ones in blue are not listed there but show up in the room schedule. They seem to be the ones that come with the basic project templates. Where can I access these to modify them or delete them?

Typically, you can't alter or delete system parameters. Use them or don't. You can rename them in the schedule column if you want but their function can not be changed.
