Hello All! I am new to RevitCity and fairly new to Revit. I am running 2013 and am having an issue with a family symbol. I have created a security camera family and a symbol to go with it that includes text. My issue is that I need to be able to move the placement of the symbol without moving the family. Currently I have some instances of family symbols and text that is illegible because they are landing on wall lines, etc. I need the family (the secuirity camera) to stay where it is, but to be able to move the symbol & text slightly.

If your camera family and text are in the same family you can't move the symbol in your project . You could make the text style opaque in the family or add more of the same text in multiple locations around the camera and use visability parameters to turn them on and off such as "top left text", top right text", "bottom left text", and "bottom right text". I would probably go with the opaque text though.

I have always hated embedded symbols or details because you can't adjst them. I understand the delema that MEP has because they sometimes want model and symbols. I think there needs to be a more creative solution to this problem.
Maybe you group the symbol with the model element so that the group can be exploded where needed and adjusted independently.

Try to create that new security camera family by using the "Special Equipment" template, then associate it with a "Special Equipment Tag".
You may consider that family as a door with the door tag. When you place a door, the associated door tag will be placed automatically. The door tag can be turned on or off, scaled per the sheet scale, and dragged to any place you like.
You can modify that tag family to any symbol you want, with a box or a star and notes.
My personal opinion, we should never mix the models with annotations; models are independent from the sheet scale, annotations are scale dependent. The headaches will always outweigh the benefits by mixing them.
Good luck!
