I am having a issue with nested families and rotating in elevation view. I know revit has issues with this and I looked at some solution on the internet but have found nothing that works yet.

I created the low detail lighting fixture model in revit and imported the high detail fixture from MAX as a .SAT file. Then created the Top and Bottom trunnion in revit. I imported all the families into one family.

Now I want to be able to rotate the fixture from the bolt in the trunnion so I can show the light fixture a 5,10, and 15 degrees. That is were the problem comes in. I would really like it if I could get 6 axis rotation on the fixtures I am creating.

I am open to any suggestion that can improve my family and family creation skills.

I am using Revit 2014

File is to large to upload here. Link below will allow you to download the file from my google drive.

 Thanks for any help.

I have also posted this same question on Autodesk because I need to fix this as soon as possible

I think you have gotten this backwards.  Learn first then build.  You needed to test your process before you got heavily invested.

Did you do any research to learn how to build families?

Have you download the 'families guide' from the autodesk site?  Your needs may be beyond that but you still need to start with the fundamentals.

Yes. I have been using the "Creating custon Revit Architecture 2013 Families" By Michael Anonuevo. It is a great book to learn from but I do not need the families that i am creating to flex. I need a simpily rotate in elevation. In my search for an answer I have found a lot of posts on this issue but the solutions that have been posted are old (2009 is the most recent one i found) I was hoping that autodesk/anyone has a better fix for this.

I have read if i create a Ref line then attach my model to it I should be able to attach a parameter to the  angular demension to get it to rotate. Maybe i am skipping a step but it is not working.

Did you simply uncheck the box in the families involved "always vertical" ?

I would think that any good family building book would have explained that.

Yes, I have that box unchecked.

I have created another family but the family is very large due to the work around I came up with. I have 6 of the same model at different tilt angles because i cannot rotate the family in elevation view. Also, I have an imported .SAT file from MAX that is very high detail. It is only visibly when the detail is set to fine. The low detail fixture I modeled in revit. So in the nested family i have 6 of the same low detail fixture set to different tilt angles and  .SAT high detail fixtures set to the same angles as the low detail fixtures.

This has been my work around until I figure out how to make Revit let me rotate these fixtures in elevation view. This is a simply command. I do not understand why it is not work. Does any know how to get around this?

Hi there,

Ok, I understand that Revit is different from AutoCAD and I’m willing to learn whatever process it is to rotate a family in elevation, now as I’m relatively new user of Revit I would like to know something very simple, it might sound stupid but I do not have a clue about it.

Here I go: I have opened a new family file and created a simple mass cube, unticked every box (always vertical off etc), what do I need to do for this simple cube to rotate once is loaded in a project file. That will help me to understand most of the process, I think.

Many Thanks for your help in advance.

S
