We are having a problem in our office with material tags. Some, but not all of them, in a view will turn to question marks in the following situations:
1. Just turning the "show crop region" on or off.
2. If a material has a cut profile.
3. If a material has a filled region drawn over it.
4. Lastly, sometimes setting the material tags in a view, then leaving it, and coming back to it later.
This is very frustrating. So much time is wasted going through and nudging all of the question marks so the material tag shows back up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Material tags can be problematic.
Turning the model crop boundry off then on should never give you problems. Turning it on after tagging when it was off will give you problems because of placement. Turning the annotation crop on after it tags were placed when it was off will also obviously cause problems also because of placement. Changing split views can also cause problems. So obviously, you want your view set correctly.
Cut profile - The tag has to be over the material - cut profile areas either added or remaining will tag and stay tagged but if the tag pointed to an area that no longer is there, then the tag is lost.
Filled regions do hide materials so find away to not do that. Edit cut profile and correct material cut patterns should solve that problem rather than drafting.
I am not sure about your number 4. I have seen instances where a plan change may move an item slightly and the tag gets lost. I have had some other problems but I can't remember why. Basically the biggest problem occurs when the material is no longer under the point of the tag.

Thanks for the response.
Turning the model crop boundary off does change all the material tags to question marks, for whatever reason. Any way to fix this?
Also, if I temporarily hide something in a view I get question marks. But if I permanantly hide an element the material tags don't change. This happens with elements that have nothing to do with the wall the tags are in. Any ideas here as well?

I don't understand why you are having the crop boundry problem because mine does not do this. Even in a split view, when I turn off the crop boundry and the view becomes one, the tag moves with the element and is still correct. Since I can't reproduce the problem, it might be an update problem. Do you have the latest updates installed?
If I hide or temporarily hide an element, the tag hides with the element. Again, update issue?

I'm not sure on the update, hopefully that's the solution. I will let you know.

Did some searching and we have the latest update, build 2, which was available back in 2011. Given that everything is current, what should I check into next?

You mean something like Build 20110916_2132(x64) (Yours could be 32)Update Release 2 - Not build 2.
If that is the case, then I have no other suggestions.

This issue of material tags losing their host is an ongoing and daily problem even until today (Revit 2014 update 2); It also affects material keynotes, and years on, we haven't had any luck in resolving it. Using ;eaders helps to a small degree, but doesn't eliminate the issue.

^^^ Yea, we are still having the same issues as well. I haven't been able to find a solution yet.

Hi there!I'm having the same problem with a project. In one view, all the tags made yesterday turned to question marks. It won't recognize any of the materials when you move the tag around nor load another tag when I click on material tag buttom. On another floor, I didn't experienced any problems today. It worked fine for today. On the floor above that, the tags that were already loaded in the project wouldn't even appear on the screen when I clicked on the buttom. Can anyone please, help me with that? Many thanks!

This is process problems.
Moving the tag doesn't matter - you have to repoint the arrow onto the material.
A lot of these problems are caused by people moving objects with the disjoin button checked on the options bar. Editing elements often causes the tag to get loast as I discussed earlier.

It's easier than you mind.
Just change the detail level to medium in plan view.
That's all

pcarcort,
Can you please elaborate? When our material tags are lost, the view is already medium. Your answer doesn't seem to address the real problem.

just wanted to post that this is still an issue in version 2017.also a problem when you change a material in a family that the tag does not update, it still shows the old material. If I nudge the tag, it then updates.considering Revit is supposed to be an abreaviation for Revise Instantaniosly. I would love it if they fixed this.
This a very big, potentially very expensive BIM problem. If I can't rely on my tags how can I convince staff to use them instead of text.
