Is the ceiling raking? Is your issue you can't trim your ceiling to the shape of the skylight in the roof? You shouldn't really be having any issues making a rectangular opening in the ceiling in its sketch...

Thanks for the reply. Basically the problem I have is correctly alligning them I can't project the angled opening through to ceiling level and locate walls within the space between ceiling and roof level to trim the opening out and finish it correctly. I've been since told that you can overlay the levels to enable the correct location to be displayed but I'm struggling!! There must be a correct method to do this?? Thanks for the reply again - It's nice to know there are people out there willing to help us beginners out. Steve

mr spot has it in one - it is all to do with sketching techniques. we use two methods as well as your underlay idea. this might be too basic, but have you considered using detail lines? draw them in one view, and then copy to clipboard. in other view use edit/paste aligned/same place and they sit exactly right. you can then sketch your opening, using those lines. and delete them. or - draw your walls using a view that sees the skylight, eg roof. then adjust them using sections etc. and they will help you draw the opening. hope that helps. btw we are newbies too - only been at revit for 12 months. very powerful program!

Thanks That seems to make sense - Pretty logical and straight forward. I'll give it a bash. I've been using it (tinkering with it) for about a year but only now starting to use it properly. Done the first part of my training last week so....... Anyway thanks again - I'll let you know if it works for me!! Fingers crossed!! Steve

FYI, Paste aligned-->Same place will paste the lines back into the same view. To paste into another view you need to use Paste Aligned-->Current View Sometimes its also a good idea to go to your roof plan, set your view to wireframe and draw it that way. Could also help to turn off all surface patterns and everything except roofs, walls and ceilings. HTH.

thanks mr spot for the insights. wire frame - must remember that! can i ask something about paste aligned/same place? when we use this, it always put the item in the same model location, in any open view. but i notice just now when testing that paste aligned/current view does the same thing. is there some subtle difference, and should we be using them differently?

If its a model element, Paste aligned-Same place will paste the element in the exact same location as the original object regardless of the varying working plane of the view. Paste aligned--Current view will paste the element using the work plane of the current view (ie: copy element from level 1 to level 2..) You could also use Paste Aligned--by level to do this but its an extra step as you have to pick the levels... HTH.
