how do i subtract from a topography without using a pad

if i understand this correctly - to remove a section of toposurface, we usually use the 'split surface' tool in "site", and then delete it. not ideal, cos a bit hard to bring it back, if you change your needs. we find this and pads a bit problematic as they do not like being near each other. have a look at the many threads by mr spot on toposurfaces - he talks of many tricks.
